PT - JOURNAL ARTICLE AU - Kroupa, Pavel AU - Kroupová, Jaroslava TI - On the Recently Uncovered Fragments of Gothic and Renaissance Murals in the Presbytery of the Church of Saint Gall in Ratměřice, Benešov District (preliminary report) DP - 2021 Dec 15 TA - Památky středních Čech PG - 73--78 VI - 35 IP - 2 AID - 10.56112/psc.2021.2.05 IS - 08621586 AB - Fragments of murals were uncovered in the presbytery of the Church of Saint Gall in Ratměřice (Central Bohemia, Benešov district) which probably date from 1547-1560. They have a form of illusive paintings suspended from a horizontal bar. The fragments show two standing figures, Saint Peter and perhaps Saint Paul. Belts of ornamental vegetable leafwork are part of the decoration. The paintings were most likely made by the same painter of the murals in the Church of Saint Wenceslas in nearby Libouň. They are rather rare examples of Gothic and Renaissance paintings that represent the transition between the Middle Ages and modern times. These rather rustic paintings were made by an anonymous painter. It is unique that the paintings represent two historically, stylistically, and ideologically related collections of murals that were probably carried out by a single painter in two churches.
