Lucie Olivová
Památky středních Čech 2022, 36(1):1-11 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2022.1.01
The article deals with Chinese woodblock prints worked into the wallpaper in the 'small cabinet' and the 'count's study' at Veltrusy Manor (Mělník District). The author not only views them as examples of Chinese art, but also clarifies their position within the Rococo interior, stating that they are rarely preserved, numerous collections of Suzhou woodblock prints from the second quarter of the 18th century that are based on their domestic tradition. Moreover, the prints borrow some European painting techniques such as shading and even the illusive trompe l'oeil technique on the notional compartments of still lifes. The author further explains the...

Památky středních Čech 2022, 36(1):12-25 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2022.1.02
The contribution discusses the prominent architect František Roith and his creations in Černošice (Prague-West District), a well-known summer resort near the City of Prague. He designed three modern-style summer villas with progressive ground floors that stood out both in Czech architectural production and abroad. Dated 1909-1910, two of his three villas included modern interior designs as well as unique geometric layouts of gardens with gazebos. Both of the villas were among the first structures with flat roofs in the Czech lands. Roith's third villa, dated 1913, represents a modern concept of a summer palace. After World War I, Roith worked on a...

Ivan Minář
Památky středních Čech 2022, 36(1):26-38 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2022.1.03
Running between Kladno and Kralupy, the Buštěhrad Railway from 1855-1856 was the first railway to transport coal in Bohemia. The 20.5 km section connected the Kladno mines with the Northern State Railway and the Vltava. It was constructed by the Lanna and the Klein Brothers companies. Three buildings have survived from the first stage of construction, the oldest being the workshops with waterworks from 1885 designed by Engineer Josef Chvála that were constructed and expanded over one hundred years, eventually reaching 187 metres. It was a locomotive depot until the 1990s. Today, a large part of the building is desolate, and the plan is to convert it...

Jindřich Nusek
Památky středních Čech 2022, 36(1):74-87 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2022.1.06
The article reminds one of the importance of the scheduled visits of Crown Prince Rudolf for the renovations of Vlašim Castle and the Prince's Game Preserve during the era of Carlos Auersperg. The construction of the Game Preserve gates and the renewal of the Moor Pavilion with the statue of Amazon in the castle park can probably be linked to the expected visit in 1876. The text deals with the prince's sojourns in 1878 and 1879 when the castle theatre hall, the new dancing hall, and the hunting pavilion in the Game Preserve were established. The scheduled but non-materialised visits in 1881 and 1882 became evident, for example, in the restoration of...
