St Bartholomew’s Church in Bylany, with the Choir Tower and Cemetery
The article summarises new findings from the archival survey and research of St Bartholomew’s Church and the cemetery that surrounds it.
The originally Gothic church with a rectangular presbytery, the type that was being built in the region in the second half of the 13th century,
was rebuilt and extended to the west during 1769–1771. Its Late Baroque form has remained except for partial modifications (the sacristy and
staircase). The tower above the rectangular choir (presbytery) is of special interest. Choir towers are rare in Bohemia, and as substantiated
by previous research, they are almost always linked to the activities of the Cistercian Monastery at Sedlec near Kutná Hora in the region.
