Contribution to the 10th Anniversary of the Designation as the National Cultural MonumentMateriálie

Josef Velfl, Jan Pešta

Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)

The group of mining buildings in Příbram – Březové Hory, declared the National Cultural Monument (NKP) ten years ago, is among the most remarkable technical monuments of the Central Bohemian Region. Established on the site of older mining works in 1813, the former Ševčin Mine holds a special position within the group. Most of its structures, rightfully attracting attention (the mine building, the engine room, the pithead room) date from the turn of the 1870s and 1880s. The Ševčin Mine has become the centre of the gradually developing Příbram Mining Museum. The paper presents the architectural, technical, and conservation values of the compound...

Jan Kypta, Jiří Marounek

Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)

The article deals with two newly identified fortified manors in the Kolín Region. The small fortification discovered between the villages of Pašinka and Bohouňovice has not been published in literature. It is a fortified manor situated along a distinctive terrain edge above the Polepka River valley. It is enclosed by a rampart and a ditch. The second recently identified fortified manor is located near the church in the village of Drahobudice. It has survived in a heavily damaged state, as it is almost completely covered with buildings from the 18th–20th centuries. Although this fortification has not appeared in literature, it was hypothetically...

Filip Facincani, Jan Zavřel, Vladimír Žáček

Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)

The article expands on the recently published study by the first of the authors of this article dealing with the interpretation of masons’ marks found on the portals of the Beroun town gates. The presented results of petrographic research revealed that stone for the Beroun town gates was quarried on Knihov Hill near Zdice, about 10 kilometres, as the crow flies, from the centre of Beroun. Research further included the localisation of other quarries providing stone for the repairs of town fortification based on early 16th-century accounts.

Alfréd Schubert, Jan Veselý

Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)

The study deals with the history and building development of the multiply rebuilt Old Castle in Horovice, originally a medieval fortress. Archival and building history research results are presented and complemented with a dendrochronological analysis of several wooden elements. The fortified structure has undergone many transformations – today, it is a single-storeyed three-wing castle. The study primarily seeks to inform about the previously unrecognised existence of the substantial part of the original masonry of the prismatic tower. In addition, a room that was most likely used as a chapel is newly described. The paper also reports on...

Karel Kibic ml., Vladimír Jakub Mrvík

Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(1)

The article summarises new findings from the archival survey and research of St Bartholomew’s Church and the cemetery that surrounds it.The originally Gothic church with a rectangular presbytery, the type that was being built in the region in the second half of the 13th century, was rebuilt and extended to the west during 1769–1771. The Archdeaconry of St Bartholomew’s Church in KolínStudie

Jana Pařízková Čevonová, Jindřich Záhorka

Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(1)

The article summarises the current findings on the building development of the archdeaconry building (Brandlova Street no. 25) of St Bartholomew’s Church in Kolín based on the building-historical survey from 2014–2015 and its updating during the reconstruction of the house in 2015. It determines the extent of the medieval parish building that corresponds to the present one and suggests specifying the dates of the crucial construction phase into the 1380s, in direct connection to the construction of the presbytery at St Bartholomew’s Church. In addition to the determination of the Baroque and classicist building phases, it points to...

Reinterpretation of the Mason's Marks on the Beroun Town GatesMateriálie

Filip Facincani

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(2):45-53 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.2.04

The article on the theory of quarry marks in the European context is divided into two parts. The practical part reinterprets the collection of mason's marks in the form of a schematised double-sided mason's axe, as detected on the portals of the Beroun town gates that are generally understood as marks of personal accounting character. It seeks to evidence the origin of the examined marks, regarding them as functional marks originating in the quarry. The theoretical part gathers the basic research statements, the theme of the quarry marks, and the level of processing the building stones across geographical and time borders in order to embed the Beroun...

Jiří Marounek, Jan Kypta

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(2):39-44 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.2.03

The article is the first publication of the fortification plan whose size and character of enclosure clearly belong to medieval settlements of the lower nobility. The fortification was built on a rocky promontory over the deep valley of the Vltava, outside the village. A massive ditch is the main component of the circumferential fortification.

Jan Veselý, Jan Kypta, Robert Šimůnek

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(2):23-38 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.2.02

The article deals with the bell tower by the parish church consecrated to Sts Simon and Jude in the village of Vitice, Central Bohemia. The ground floor is made of stone, while the bell-chair is made of wood. Based on the dendrochronological analysis, the tower was erected in the late 1660s. Attention focuses primarily on the construction of the second floor walls and the roof frame. The medieval door, used secondarily for the ground floor entrance, deserves closer inspection as well. The bell in the tower dates back to 1560.

Church of St Mark in Markovice near Žleby: 1370 - A Tipping PointStudie

Dalibor Prix

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(2):1-22 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.2.01

The article focuses on a closer understanding and evaluation of a presbytery that remained in the Central Bohemian Church of St Mark in Markovice near Žleby (Kutná Hora District). It suggests shifting the date of the Gothic structure's origin from the first half of the 14th century to the period around 1370, specifying the facts about the church's reconstructions and transformations from the late 18th to the 20th century, and focusing on those who made modern changes. In conclusion, it suggests an interpretation of the structure's uncommon appearance, the context of the construction, and the possible role of the holder of the right of a patronage -...

The First Buštěhrad Railway Station in KladnoMateriálie

Ivan Minář

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(1):38-49 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.1.04

The article is dedicated to the first coal railway station in Bohemia that was built by the Buštěhrad Railway Company east of Kladno in 1855-1856. Situated adjacent to coal mines and iron works, the railway station, like the rest of the area, underwent a dramatic development for more than a century. Eventually, the historically preserved part of the station from 1872 was demolished without permit, but the eldest building from the first stage has survived on the site, left forgotten in the Kladno industrial zone.

Emil Prückner, A Builder of Nymburk and His Traces in Lysá nad LabemMateriálie

Eva Zápalková

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(1):27-37 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.1.03

The article discusses the little-known architect and builder Emil Prückner, especially his education and building activities at the turn of the 20th century, highlighting his work in Lysá nad Labem. New information came especially from studying the archival materials at the Lysá nad Labem department of the Nymburk State Regional Archive. In addition to linking Emil Prückner with concrete buildings in Lysá nad Labem, the study of documents offered an invaluable insight into the building practice and its inner culture in the context of the Austro-Hungarian official authorities. The documents further outlined the business ethics or period practice in...

Hana Prixová Dvorská

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(1):13-26 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.1.02

St Nicholas Church in Hnidousy is one of the few Art Nouveau-style sacral structures in Bohemia and one of many buildings designed by Anton Möller of Varnsdorf. While contemporary sources have not yet reflected his authorship, it is recorded in archives along with abundant documentation of the historical circumstances of the structure's origin. Anton Möller was a prolific builder and erected a wide array of architectural structures from technical and urban ones to shrines that he designed, for example, for the Society of St Boniface. His technical solution of municipal abattoirs in Varnsdorf, Kraslice, and Ostrava earned him the greatest renown. His...

Jiří Marounek, Jan Kypta

Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(1):1-12 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.1.01

The primary focus of the article is to present detailed plans of two undated fortified settlements near the village of Mcely (Nymburk District). The documentation is based on surface research exploiting the data from aerial scanning of the earth. The plans chart the relics of fortifications as well as damage caused by agriculture and forestry. The larger of the two explored settlements ranks among the most remarkable monuments of its kind even beyond Central Bohemia. Its complicated fortification system and exceptionally large, enclosed area attract attention.
