From the Repair of the Facade of the Parsonage of the Church of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary in MaršoviceZprávy
Dagmar Primusová
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The parsonage in Maršovice (District Benešov) dates back to the early 18th century and was originally a new Baroque structure that later underwent significant modifications. The loose roof covering and façade plastering posed a danger to the local road passing in front of the building. This situation changed with a new owner, Charita Nový Knín, who in 2021 prepared a design for a comprehensive renovation and modifications for social service purposes and secured co-financing from the IROP Programme. Subsequently, the overall reconstruction began, which was completed by the end of 2023.

Jindřiška Černochová
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The Renaissance fortress in Krásná Hora nad Vltavou was rebuilt in the Baroque style, most likely transforming it into an administrative building. It was later renovated in the Classicist style and converted into a granary. The repairs conducted during 2021–2022 revealed new information about the building’s lesser-known Baroque phase.
The Former Hospital of St Elisabeth in Lysá nad LabemZprávy
Eva Zápalková
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The article presents information about the Museum of Bedřich Hrozný in Lysá nad Labem, built as a Late Baroque women’s hospital on the foundations of an earlier structure. It uncovers the origin, the previous hospital rules and operation, the links to the Hospital of the Holy Cross at Karlov, and the circumstances of its closure in 1805. The article monitors the hospital’s destiny in the 19th century as a building rented out for various purposes. The early 20th century marked a favourable milestone when the building was taken over by the municipality and became the seat of the municipal savings bank. The overall reconstruction in 2015 resulted...
The Kentucky Coffee Tree on the Premises of the Evangelical Congregation in Lysá nad Labem or the History of a Tree in the Urban Conservation AreaMateriálie
Stanislav Svoboda
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
Using the example of the memorial Kentucky coffee tree, located on the grounds of the Evangelical Congregation in Lysá nad Labem, which is recognised as a cultural monument, this short study seeks to illustrate the channels through which woody plants could be introduced and spread in the country, beyond aristocratic or industrial gardens and parks, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is particularly noteworthy that, in this case, there were three examples of the same kind and perhaps also the same age, each destined for a different place.
On the Little-Known Examples of Early Gothic Chiselled Vegetable Décor in Kutná Hora District in the 13th CenturyMateriálie
Pavel Kroupa
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The article analyses the Early Gothic chiselled vegetal décor on the portals of the Church of St Bartholomew in Okřesaneč and the Church of Sts Peter and Paul in Slavošov in the Kutná Hora District. According to the analysis of the Okřesaneč church portal décor, it was created by the workshop of the Church of St Bartholomew in Kolín nad Labem. It features a naturalist type of vegetal décor from the late second half of the 13th century. The vegetal décor of the Slavošov portal is seriously damaged. With some degree of probability, it can be considered a generalised type of vegetal décor from around the mid-13th century.
The Castle with the Holy Trinity Chapel in Dobřejovice around 1700Studie
Pavel Zahradník
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The article discusses the Holy Trinity Chapel in Dobřejovice near Prague, which is part of the local castle. Around 1700, Count František Karel Přehořovský of Kvasejovice, who (along with his wife) owned the Dobřejovice estate, commissioned the castle’s construction by converting it from the previous fortress. Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, who carried out the reconstruction, worked for Count Přehořovský and designed some of his most remarkable buildings (the palace at no. 347/III in the Lesser Town of Prague and the Piarist Monastery and church in Benešov). Nevertheless, it remains uncertain who designed the castle chapel in Dobřejovice, which...
On the Identification of the Medieval Heart of Dobřejovice CastleStudie
Jan Pešta
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The article focuses on new findings from the building history survey of the previously unexplored castle in Dobřejovice (Prague-East District). The core of the current low-key, austere, and primarily Baroque four-wing structure is a Gothic water fortress with a nearly square ground floor. Relatively small, yet evidential remains of a medieval structure were identified, allowing for an approximate reconstruction of the residence. The primary contribution of the article is its focus on a hitherto unknown fortress, which broadens our awareness of the dense network of medieval feudal seats in Prague’s vicinity.
New Findings about the Transformations of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in ObděniceStudie
Jan Veselý
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
During the recent reconstruction of the ceiling and walls of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Obděnice (dist. Příbram), illusive paintings were discovered on the nave walls, forming a single architectural unit with the coffered ceiling from 1891–1983. Restoration research in the presbytery confirmed the existence of Late Renaissance paintings from the era of Jakub Krčín of Jelčany and Sedlčany. The original form of the triumphal arch of a perished Romanesque apse was discovered. Additionally, the findings enabled a more detailed understanding of the complex development of the right window located in the southern wall of the...
Klášterní Skalice
The Transformation of the Cistercian Monastery from the Middle Ages to Modern TimesStudie
Alena Nachtmannová
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The Cistercian Monastery in Klášterní Skalice was the earliest foundation of this order in the Czech lands. Nevertheless, it was a significant institution under the personal patronage of Wenceslas IV. Both the size of the initiated structures and their artistic quality reflected this reality. However, the monastery remained unfinished and vanished completely during the Hussite Era. During the 15th and 16th centuries, several attempts were made by the neighbouring Catholic noblemen and the parent monastery in Sedlec near Kutná Hora to renovate it, but all efforts were unsuccessful. It was only after the Battle of White Mountain that the local monastic...

Vladislav Razím, Jiří Marounek
Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(1)
The article presents the results of the survey and documentation of the remains of the tower house (or stronghold) known as Hrochův Hrádek (Příbram District). Moreover, it highlights the previously fruitless efforts to conserve the structure and the rapid decrease of the masonry and its informational value. The tower was most likely built during the first half of the 14th century in an abandoned early medieval fortified settlement.

Josef Velfl, Jan Pešta
Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)
The group of mining buildings in Příbram – Březové Hory, declared the National Cultural Monument (NKP) ten years ago, is among the most remarkable technical monuments of the Central Bohemian Region. Established on the site of older mining works in 1813, the former Ševčin Mine holds a special position within the group. Most of its structures, rightfully attracting attention (the mine building, the engine room, the pithead room) date from the turn of the 1870s and 1880s. The Ševčin Mine has become the centre of the gradually developing Příbram Mining Museum. The paper presents the architectural, technical, and conservation values of the compound...

Jan Kypta, Jiří Marounek
Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)
The article deals with two newly identified fortified manors in the Kolín Region. The small fortification discovered between the villages of Pašinka and Bohouňovice has not been published in literature. It is a fortified manor situated along a distinctive terrain edge above the Polepka River valley. It is enclosed by a rampart and a ditch. The second recently identified fortified manor is located near the church in the village of Drahobudice. It has survived in a heavily damaged state, as it is almost completely covered with buildings from the 18th–20th centuries. Although this fortification has not appeared in literature, it was hypothetically...

Filip Facincani, Jan Zavřel, Vladimír Žáček
Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)
The article expands on the recently published study by the first of the authors of this article dealing with the interpretation of masons’ marks found on the portals of the Beroun town gates. The presented results of petrographic research revealed that stone for the Beroun town gates was quarried on Knihov Hill near Zdice, about 10 kilometres, as the crow flies, from the centre of Beroun. Research further included the localisation of other quarries providing stone for the repairs of town fortification based on early 16th-century accounts.

The article deals with the Church of St Bartholomew in Rakovník and its historical role within the town‘s social structure. It analyses the development of the church from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century, exploring its function as a religious, cultural, and social centre of the town. Not only did it provide a spiritual space, but it was also a place of social meetings, town ceremonies, and a symbol of town identity. The study mostly draws from the archival sources of the municipal and deanery archives of Rakovník.
New Findings about the Building History of the Hořovice Old CastleStudie
Alfréd Schubert, Jan Veselý
Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(2)
The study deals with the history and building development of the multiply rebuilt Old Castle in Horovice, originally a medieval fortress. Archival and building history research results are presented and complemented with a dendrochronological analysis of several wooden elements. The fortified structure has undergone many transformations – today, it is a single-storeyed three-wing castle. The study primarily seeks to inform about the previously unrecognised existence of the substantial part of the original masonry of the prismatic tower. In addition, a room that was most likely used as a chapel is newly described. The paper also reports on...

Karel Kibic ml., Vladimír Jakub Mrvík
Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(1)
The article summarises new findings from the archival survey and research of St Bartholomew’s Church and the cemetery that surrounds it.The originally Gothic church with a rectangular presbytery, the type that was being built in the region in the second half of the 13th century, was rebuilt and extended to the west during 1769–1771. Its Late Baroque form has remained except for partial modifications (the sacristy andstaircase). The tower above the rectangular choir (presbytery) is of special interest. Choir towers are rare in Bohemia, and as substantiatedby previous research, they are almost always linked to the activities...
The Archdeaconry of St Bartholomew’s Church in KolínStudie
Jana Pařízková Čevonová, Jindřich Záhorka
Památky středních Čech 2024, 38(1)
The article summarises the current findings on the building development of the archdeaconry building (Brandlova Street no. 25) of St Bartholomew’s Church in Kolín based on the building-historical survey from 2014–2015 and its updating during the reconstruction of the house in 2015. It determines the extent of the medieval parish building that corresponds to the present one and suggests specifying the dates of the crucial construction phase into the 1380s, in direct connection to the construction of the presbytery at St Bartholomew’s Church. In addition to the determination of the Baroque and classicist building phases, it points to...

Reinterpretation of the Mason's Marks on the Beroun Town GatesMateriálie
Filip Facincani
Památky středních Čech 2023, 37(2):45-53 | DOI: 10.56112/psc.2023.2.04
The article on the theory of quarry marks in the European context is divided into two parts. The practical part reinterprets the collection of mason's marks in the form of a schematised double-sided mason's axe, as detected on the portals of the Beroun town gates that are generally understood as marks of personal accounting character. It seeks to evidence the origin of the examined marks, regarding them as functional marks originating in the quarry. The theoretical part gathers the basic research statements, the theme of the quarry marks, and the level of processing the building stones across geographical and time borders in order to embed the Beroun...
